April Fools is a time for all of us to have some fun and play a few jokes on people.
Newspapers, radio stations and companies have been known to do the same. Here is a sample of what one radio station did.

Cleaning the Phone Lines!           

One radio station prank took place on April Fool's Day. They announced that the phone company would be cleaning the dirt out of the phone lines that afternoon. They do this, it seems, by blowing air into the wires in the switching station. The problem is that the dirt comes out of the earpiece and mouthpiece of the telephone and could dirty the rugs or furniture in your house.

Consequently, the phone company asks that the good citizens please get plastic bags and put them over the handsets of the telephones to protect their belongings.

Stores reported a run on plastic bags, and the phone company made the radio station retract the original claim.

 Whenever Liz and Sylvia attend the fashion markets they have the opportunity to hear and connect with major fashion leaders from across America. These well known "gurus" offer educational seminars for those business owners who are in attendance at the market. The seminars are chocked full of ideas for marketing, merchandising and buying.

This photo of Liz and Sylvia with fashion "guru" T. J. Reid was taken at the most recent market where T. J. was one of the featured speakers. She is one of America's most respected and "in demand" speakers.

T.J. Reid writes and publishes Fashion Advantage, a magazine which provides advice on buying, selling, marketing and merchandising. The magazine is published 5 times a year in print and weekly by e-mail. It is now in its 21st year of print and has been honored 5 times as the winner in the magazine category by The National Federation of press Women.

You can appreciate how honored Liz and Sylvia were to actually meet T.J. in person and to hear her speak. Fashion Advantage magazine enjoys a special spot on the reading shelf for Liz and her staff.

Meet Sylvia Nesbitt

This month we continue our series of introductions to the Cathy Allan team with the third longest standing employee, Sylvia Nesbitt. Sylvia has been a member of the team for nine years.

Sylvia and her husband Jim owned Nesbitt’s Meat market for many years and when they decided to sell the business Sylvia began looking around for a new venture. She says that she had, “always been interested in fashion” and had met Liz some 30 years earlier when they were both modeling at the Lindsay Fair (Liz at that time was just a Babe in Sylvia's arms). Now anyone who has ever seen Sylvia model knows exactly why Liz chose this elegant, statuesque woman to participate in a fashion show. And the bonus is that she comes to each show with a loyal band of supporters!

Sylvia is no stranger to the business world having spent several years as a pharmacy assistant at the former Quinn’s pharmacy in Lindsay. And her business savvy is put to excellent use by Liz as Sylvia is the staff person who inputs all the new stock and makes sure each item is ticketed and ready to go on the floor. That may be why you often don’t see her in the store because she is tucked away in the back working at her computer. (We do occasionally turn her loose on customers!)

The fact that Sylvia is Liz’s constant companion at the fashion markets in Toronto where they select new lines for the upcoming season is a testimony to Sylvia’s great fashion sense.

Sylvia and her husband Jim have two sons Drew (Lara) and Adam (Lisa) and currently live in Lindsay. Sylvia says that, "Drew and Adam have amazing young women as their partners." (We wonder if Sylvia hand picked them !!!)

So the next time you visit the store at the new location of 98 Kent Street West poke your head around the back wall and say hello to Sylvia who will be busily checking invoices, placing special orders or producing price tags for the new stock.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

It's Prom Time          

 

Cathy Allan Ladieswear has a beautiful selection of prom dresses sure to appeal to all the young ladies looking for "the perfect" dress for this very special occasion.

 

Liz keeps a Prom Registry listing the schools, the names of the young girls and the dresses which they have selected. She and her staff make sure that there will never be two girls from the same school purchasing identical dresses from their store.

Whole Ham Glazed with

Red Wine and four Spices

Ingredients:

 

15lb (6.8 kg)  fully cooked bone-in whole ham

1/2  cup liquid honey

1/4 cup (50 mL)  red wine or pineapple juice

2 tbsp (25 mL) butter

1-1/2 tsp (7 mL)  pepper

1 tsp (5 mL)  ground nutmeg

1/2tsp (2 mL)  ground cloves

1/2tsp (2 mL)  ground ginger

1 tbsp Dijon mustard

Whole cloves

Directions:

 

Place ham, fat side up, on rack in roasting pan; pour in 2 cups (500 mL) water. Cover pan tightly with foil; roast in 325°F (160°C) oven for 2 hours, adding more water if necessary to maintain level.

If ham has skin, slide sharp knife under skin and lift off. Trim fat layer to 1/4-inch (5 mm) thickness. Diagonally score fat to form diamond pattern.

In small saucepan, combine honey, red wine, butter, pepper, nutmeg, cloves and ginger over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until butter is melted. Stir in Dijon mustard; let cool slightly. Brush enough of the glaze over ham to cover; stud centre of each diamond pattern with clove.

Roast ham, uncovered and brushing several times with remaining glaze, for 45 to 60 minutes or until meat thermometer inserted in centre registers 140°F (60°C). Transfer to cutting board and tent with foil; let stand for 15 minutes.

To carve ham, cut down to bone into 1/4-inch (5 mm) thick slices. With knife parallel to bone, cut off slices along bone. Turn remaining meaty portion up; repeat carving.

 

Additional Information:

 

Tip: For brunch or when serving a smaller group, choose a 2 lb (1 kg) boneless ham; then halve the remaining ingredients and baking time.

Makes 6 to 8 servings.
