The
August Civic Holiday Graves Simcoe The first Monday in August is a holiday all across Ontario. By law, a civic holiday is defined as any holiday which is legally recognized and for which employers are required to offer holiday pay. It is a municipal holiday and not designated as an official statutory holiday by provincial legislation. In some parts of Canada the term “Civic Holiday” refers to the annual holiday on the first Monday of August. But the holiday is called different things in different parts of Canada. There is no universally recognized name for this holiday .In Ontario there are several different local names which honor significant people in the history of the province. In Toronto the day is known as Simcoe Day after John Graves Simcoe who founded the town of York which later became known as Toronto and who was the first lieutenant governor of the province. In Ottawa it is called Colonel By Day in honor of John By who founded Bytown which later became known as Ottawa and who led the construction of the Rideau Canal.
No matter what it is called the August first long weekend is a much awaited holiday in our short Canadian summer. With the amazing weather we are currently enjoying no doubt campsites, beaches, ball parks and backyards will be full of folks having fun and enjoying the break from work. Happy Civic Holiday to all our readers!

Living in 2011
YOU KNOW YOU ARE LIVING IN 2011 when...
1. You accidentally enter your PIN on the microwave.
2. You haven't played solitaire with real cards in years.
3. You have a list of 15 phone numbers to reach your family of three.
4. You e-mail and text the person who works at the desk next to you.
5. Your reason for not staying in touch with friends and family is that they don't have e-mail or text addresses.
6. You pull up in your own driveway and use your cell phone to see if anyone is home to help you carry in the groceries...
7. Every commercial on television has a web site at the bottom of the screen.
8. Leaving the house without your cell phone, which you didn't even have the first 20 or 30 (or 60) years of your life, is now a cause for panic and you turn around to go and get it.
9. You get up in the morning and go on line before getting your coffee.
10. You start tilting your head sideways to smile. : )
~~~~~~~~~~~AND FINALLY~~~~~ ~~~~~~~
NOW U R LAUGHING at yourself.
News from the Store
It’s the time of year when everything seems to be in transition. We have enjoyed a beautiful sunny and hot summer and are unwilling to accept that August is just a step away from the fall fashion season. Traditionally August is the time when we search for bargains that we might tuck away for next summer or for a winter vacation to a warm climate. But we might be the kind of shopper who wants to get a jump on Fall and is anxiously awaiting the arrival of the new fall lines. We can easily find something that will suit either shopping type. Much of the spring and summer stock is on sale and we are just beginning to receive our clothing lines for fall. A new selection of fascinators has arrived and the styles and colors are terrific. If you are invited to a fall wedding or special event consider trying one on. They will add a very unique detail to your outfit. For those who prefer a more traditional hat there are several styles from which to chose. A reminder that we carry an extensive line of costume jewelry to help you accessorize your new outfit. We love our new location and if you haven’t taken the opportunity to visit the new store we invite you to come in soon.
Nikki Kirkby
|
Meet Nikki Nikki Kirkby has been a part time member of the Cathy Allan Ladieswear staff for four years. In some ways coming to work at the store was a natural transition for Nikki. When her Mother Tammy worked at the store Nikki was a frequent visitor. She knew everyone who worked there and felt very much at home in the store. When Nikki started high school she wanted a part time job where she could work after school and on weekends. No surprise that her “Auntie Liz” invited her to come to Cathy Allan’s. You might say that Nikki’s job could be best described as a “Jill of all trades!” She helps with clean up, steams new arrivals, enters data in the computer, occasionally serves customers, helps prepare clothes for fashion shows and frequently models in the shows. She loves having the opportunity to model and has taken some training in that field. Most recently, however you may find her climbing into the front windows to retrieve some article of clothing from the display----at least that is the reason she gives to staff for her frequent trips into the window!!!! Nikki attends St. Thomas Aquinas Secondary School in Lindsay and is an “A” student. She is very focused on her studies and has a career goal of becoming a veterinarian. She says that her Grandmother raised her to love animals and “sometimes animals are easier to get along with than people”. All of the staff at Cathy Allan’s love Nikki and enjoy working with her. She has a beautiful smile, a pleasant disposition and is always very kind to everyone. The staff wishes her every success as she continues her future studies.
Famous Women in History We are continuing our series featuring famous women in history. We hope you are enjoying this new section and if you have any suggestions for women we might include in upcoming editions please send their names by e-mail to contest@cathyallan.ca ______________________________________________________________
We are thrilled to present another famous woman in history ...Canadian icon, Shania Twain. Born Eileen Regina Edwards on August 28th 1965 in Ontario, she grew up in the mining town of Timmins, Ontario. In 1987 Shania’s parents were killed in a car accident leaving her to care for her three younger siblings. From an early age she was already writing songs and singing and had appeared on Canadian television.
Her first album The Woman in Me sold 12 million copies becoming the best selling country album by any female artist in history and earned Shania a Grammy for the Best Country Album. Her third album Come on Over contained eight hit singles and holds the amazing distinction of being the bestselling country album of all time. Readers have no doubt tapped their toes and danced the night away to such favorites as That Don’t Impress Me Much, Honey I’m Home and From this Moment On. After some personal suffering followed by a break from the music industry we were thrilled when Shania announced her return and launched a new show currently running in Las Vegas. No doubt this very talented Canadian singer and song writer will soar to new heights as she returns to singing and song writing.
We wish her all the best.
The Quotes of
August
"Summertime And the living is easy Fish are jumpin' And the cotton is high
Oh, your daddy's rich And your mama's good lookin' So hush little baby now don't you cry
One of these mornin's You're gonna rise up singin' Then you'll spread your wings And take to the sky
But til that mornin' Ain't nothin' can harm you With your daddy And your mammy standin' by."
- George Gershwin and Dubose Heyward, Porgy and Bess ______________________________________________________________
"And hate the bright stillness of the noon without wind, without motion. the only other living thing a hawk, hungry for prey, suspended in the blinding, sunlit blue.
And yet how gentle it seems to someone raised in a landscape short of rain— the skyline of a hill broken by no more trees than one can count, the grass, the empty sky, the wish for water." - Dana Gioia
