Brief History of Mother's Day

Mother’s day was celebrated as early as the ancient time. Ancient Greek celebrated Rhea, the mother of all Gods. Ancient Romans had spring celebrations in honor of their mother Goddess, Cybele.

During the 1600's, the early Christians in England celebrated a day to honor Mary, the mother of Christ. During the 1700’s those living on the British Isles initiated a religious celebration of motherhood, called Mothering Sunday. Celebrated on the 4th Sunday of Lent (the 40 day period leading up to Easter), "Mothering Sunday" honored the mothers of England. It was in 1900's that the celebrations eventually fade out.

Mother's Day in Canada

Mother's Day 2011

Sunday  May 8, 2011

Many Canadians celebrate Mother's Day by showing their appreciation for mothers or mother figures. The Mother's Day date in Canada is on the second Sunday of May each year.

Early celebrations of Mother's Day originated from Canada's neighboring country, the United States. Carnations are a popular Mother's Day symbol in both Canada and the United States. Some people may choose to wear a carnation as a brooch on Mother's Day. However, other flowers are also given to mothers or mother figures to symbolize one's love and appreciation for them.

Window ,Window on the Kent

Looking at you is an awesome event.

You are truly a picture of elegance

Crafted by someone with great fashion sense!

Well………if you haven't seen the absolutely beautiful windows at Cathy Allan's new location then you are missing a wonderful treat. They are the talk of the town! In fact it is amazing how many ladies come into the store just to comment on the fabulous window displays.

In keeping with Liz's desire to create a newer, more boutique- like image she very cleverly planned for clients to begin their fashion journey through her window displays.

How fortunate she was to find a creative and talented artist who was willing to work with her. David Bennett is an expert in window dressing and has an amazing artistic background. David likes to develop a "feel" for the type of image his client wishes to project. Prior to beginning his work for Liz, David spent a lot of time in the store talking with Liz and her staff  in order to develop a keener sense of the image Liz was trying to create. His window displays are a wonderful example of style, class and dramatic flare.

Now his bi weekly visits are viewed with anticipation as everyone anxiously awaits the unveiling of the "new look".

Sandy O'Neill

Meet Sandy O'Neill

If you have ever attended one of the many fashion shows by Cathy Allan

Ladieswear you will be sure to remember Sandy, She is the petite "ball of fire" who looks fabulous in any outfit we chose to have her model. Small in stature but big in heart is a perfect way to describe this six year member of the Cathy Allan team.

After sending her resume for Liz to consider it wasn't long before Liz welcomed the chance to bring Sandy on to the team. Sandy arrived for her interview, the position was offered and the "rest is history" her previous experience in retail made her an excellent fit for the store.

Sandy is most often the organizer behind the scenes when Liz is getting ready for one of the many fashion shows throughout the year. Sandy does an amazing job of fitting the models, arranging for fitting times and generally outlining the tasks that need to be done before show time.

You might also find her late in the evening helping Liz to merchandise. Her excellent sense of fashion is the reason for her selection as "the merchandising guru" along side Liz.

Sandy and her husband Dan have two terrific sons Mark and his wife Julie and Devon and his soon to be wife Megan. Family is very important to this couple and they sure have a lot of them !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In addition to work and family Sandy manages to find time for her favorite past times of curling, gardening and walking ( at least she claims that she walks !!!)

Please say a special hello to Sandy next time you visit the store.

Famous Women in History

Amelia Earhart Completes Solo Transatlantic Flight

Amelia Earhart became the first woman to fly solo transatlantic this month, 79 years ago. She left Saint John, New Brunswick on the morning of May 20, 1932, stopping briefly in Newfoundland and intended to exactly duplicate Lindbergh's flight to Paris five years earlier.

Her flight was sponsored by a wealthy woman named Amy Guest. Guest wanted to be the first woman to fly transatlantic, but settled for being the money behind it. She chose Earhart because she had "the right image". Earhart flew with a three-person team in 1928, becoming the first woman to fly transatlantic (and piloted part of the way).

Her solo flight lasted 15 hours, 18 minutes and she traveled over 2000 miles. It was plagued by troubles, though. The weather went nuts, gas line leaked into the cockpit and her altimeter broke so she didn't even know what altitude she was flying at. She dropped suddenly 3000 feet once and went into a spin that she obviously pulled out of. Due to the weather and the other problems she had to scrub her landing in Paris and landed instead in a field near Londonderry, Ireland on May 21, 1932.

She received the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Gold Medal of the National Geographic Society and the Cross of Knight of the Legion of Honor from France.

The Quote of May

"The world's favorite season is the spring.
All things seem possible in May."

                                                  -  Edwin Way Teale

________________________________________________________________

"In the marvelous month of May
when all the buds were bursting,
then in my heart did
love arise.
In the marvelous month of May
when all the birds were singing,
then did I reveal to her
my yearning and longing."

                                              -  Heinrich Heine
